FG / Labour U-Turn on Sligo Cancer Services

Press Release Feb 15th

Lies, lies and damned lies

Green Party candidate in Roscommon-South Leitrim, Garreth McDaid, has accused Fine Gael and Labour candidates of misleading campaigners for the retention of Cancer services at Sligo General Hospital over their plans to re-instate those services when in Government.

“When the plan to move cancer surgical services from Sligo to Galway was first announced, the Green Party was the only party in the region to support that move. This was done in a hail of criticism from every other party, and amidst intense public vilification, but we persisted with that support, because we knew it was the right solution for the wider region.”

“Over the last 3 years, Fine Gael and Labour candidates have made promises in relation to reversing this move at every available opportunity. However, recent comments by both Joan Burton and Enda Bruton clearly demonstrate that these parties have no intention of reversing the move, and that the promises made over the last 3 years were a cynical election stunt.”

“This is the sort of short-sighted populism that undermines trust in the political system, and Fine Gael and Labour candidates should be ashamed of the way they have misled campaigners and set expectations that their wider party never had any intention of honouring.”
