And what now?

Over the coming months, the Green Party in Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo will be building on what we achieved during the General Election campaign.

We will also do everything we can to assist constituents in Roscommon-South Leitrim and Sligo-North Leitrim in their dealings both with Government Department and Government Agencies.

The AGM for a local group will take place during July, at which a new Executive will be appointed. This will include a contact for each of the counties represented by the group. Details will be posted on this site when they are available.

We will be involved in a number of issues that are of particular importance to the region, including the forthcoming redraw of constituency boundaries and the formulation of the new Leitrim County Development Plan.

In Government

I’ve been out of the country for a couple of weeks so I haven’t had a time until now to update my blog re. going into Government with Fianna Fail.

I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about the Programme for Government myself, particularly in that we didn’t secure an awful lot in the area of public transport, but I did support the recommendation of the NEC to accept the deal.

The difficulty for the Green Party in the negotiations was the strength of Fianna Fail’s position, in that they were able to form a Government without us.

Our options were therefore to allow FF and PDs continue in Government as before, or do a deal with them that would at least allow us some influence over Government policy.  We choose the later option, which we may not have been universally popular, but which is undoubtedly the best option for the country as a whole.

The Programme for Government is also a better document than might appear at first glance, and it contains several important commitments that would not have been  included had the Green Party not agreed to support Bertie Ahern as Taoiseach.

All in all, I’m confident that the Green Party has made the right decision, and look forward to the next 5 years and to the many challenges we will face.

Thank You

A big thank you to everyone in Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon who voted for the Green Party on Thursday 24th.

On a tough day for small parties, the Green Party polled over 3% in Sligo and Leitrim, up from 0% in 2002! This was one of the biggest increases in the Green Party vote anywhere in the country.

We also polled 8% of 1st preference votes in Carrick on Shannon, and 6% in Drumshanbo and Leitrim.

Roscommon was always going to be a tough call, given the party’s very low profile in the county and the significance of the hospital issue, but the Party did poll well in Cortober and North Roscommon.

This General Election has established the Green Party as a political option in the North West. We will now redouble our efforts, keep raising the issues that the other parties don’t want to talk about and challenge again the next time the people go to the polls.

Our Children would vote Green
