The long awaited General Election is now upon us.

We have selected 2 experienced candidates to run in the area: Garreth McDaid in the constituency of Roscommon-South Leitrim, and Johnny Gogan in the constituency of Sligo-North Leitrim.

In this election, it is almost certain that we will see a change of Government. That is a normal and essential part of politics, and it is healthy that all political parties participate in Government at some stage.

However, this election should not be treated as a mere procedure.

The parties that will must likely form the next Government, Fine Gael and Labour, have spent the last 2 years promising the people that there is alternative to the very difficult and necessary decisions that have been taken by the current Government.

It is now time for them to substantiate those promises, because the only thing worse than no hope is false hope.

The Green Party will play its part in ensuring that other parties fully explain, and justify, their policy positions.

We will also continue to promote the issues that we have always promoted: proper planning, renewable energy,  public transport and the fight against climate change.

We are the only party who is proud to address these issues, and not shy away from policies that are unpopular but necessary.

It is vital that our voice is heard in our national parliament, and we will fight this election to that end.
